Surfing Hurricane Ida on Florida’s Gulf Coast

November 9, 2009

Posted by David McRee at BlogTheBeach.com.
Today I spent a couple of hours photographing the surfers in the Gulf of Mexico enjoying a southerly swell from Hurricane Ida. This is a classic break– steep shifty peaks and a short wall breaking in shallow water. I’m not going to name the break, but if you’ve ever surfed [...]

South Florida Surfing Blues

Hurricane Ike Redux

February 16, 2009

Flipping through my photos this evening I came across some shots I took down on Anna Maria Island on September 11, 2008 during Hurricane Ike’s passage through the gulf. We had some pretty big swells. I surfed here a lot back in the late 1970’s with my buddy Alex. Those were the days.  Definitely too [...]

Jumping Dolphin and Surfer

January 24, 2009

During the swell from Hurricane Dean back in 2007 I happened to be shooting video of the surfers in Blind Pass, which rarely breaks.  Blind Pass is a narrow and relatively shallow pass between the north end of St. Pete Beach (aka Upham Beach) and the south end of Treasure Island (aka Sunset Beach).
This surfer [...]

November 28, 2008

Everywhere you go on Florida’s Atlantic Coast you see surfboards of all kinds. The surf is nearly always up to some degree on the Atlantic Coast.

Supplying all the wave riding vehicles are innumerable surf shops and beach supply stores. But you don’t have to buy a surfboard–most any surf shop will rent a surfboard to [...]
