I Was on this Beach… by Diana Taylor
Someone once said, “All good stories begin and end in the heart.” All of my really good stories start out with the words, “I was on this beach…”
I’ve written stories, made life changing decisions, and sorted through some really adverse situations all while out at the beach.
Sometimes I walk. Sometimes I sit. Sometimes I’m without thought and simply meditate. Others times that’s all I do is think. But there’s one thing that remains a constant and that’s the ever changing face of the beach. There are so many different aspects to explore.
Where I live, in Delray Beach, Florida, the dunes are wide and so is the beach. The diversity of dune plants offers a myriad of textures as well as six different shades of green. Each path through the dunes to the ocean is as individual as the color of the sea is from one day to the next. Following the narrow paths, anticipation builds with each step until the sea is in full view.
The color of the water ranges from stormy gray to turquoise green depending on weather conditions, but it really doesn’t matter what the sea or sand looks like. What matters is the beach itself. Residing there in the sights and sounds is a magic. There is a peace. It’s the very reason why people are drawn to the beach.

...simply spending some time at the beach will melt away all my troubles freeing my creativity, and soothing my soul.
It’s been my experience that whenever I’m at odds with a life circumstance or I’m stuck in some aspect of creating my Pug At The Beach adventures, simply spending some time at the beach will melt away all my troubles freeing my creativity, and soothing my soul. Even a virtual trip to the beach has healing properties.
Before I lived in South Florida, my home was far from the ocean requiring a two hour drive to visit waters that rarely got above 68 degrees even in the height of an all too short summer. In those years, I gathered photographs and brochures of various tropical beaches as a way of keeping my spirits up while I worked toward my dream of living at the beach. Posted throughout my house, I was able to go to the beach all day everyday. What I didn’t know then was that I was creating a vision board.
A vision board is an effective tool for creating new worlds and making dreams come true. Taking action while focusing on our desires combined with affirmations and consistent hard work brings results. These days I’m living my vision board and because I know this stuff works, I encourage people to do the same.
Whenever I get the chance, whether though writing or coaching or simply in conversations, I tell people, “Chase your dreams.” Whether it’s having a life partner, taking a European vacation, or a living at the beach, chase your dreams. That’s really the only goal worth pursuing because without dreams we are no different than the washed up exoskeletons of sea creatures. And while they may be nice to pick up and bring home, shells are nothing more than the discarded home of a formerly living thing.
So, chase your dreams. And remember, if I can make my dreams of living at the beach come true, you can make your dreams come true, too. Start with the photographs here and these words, “I was on this beach…”
