Yahoo! Travel today is featuring a Forbes article about “America’s “Scariest Highways.” The author, Tim Kiladze, includes U.S. Highway 1 (aka the Overseas Highway) through the Florida Keys on the list of scary highways, writing:
Outside of Key West this roadway turns into a two-lane bridge that crosses an expansive body of shallow water that reflects blinding sunlight. On top of that, “it’s really tough for the driver to stay focused because everything around you is so blue,” Sedenquist says.
The article drew heavily on input from travel writers Mark Sedenquist and Megan Edwards, of RoadTrip America.
I drove the Overseas Highway last May and found the 130 mile drive to be beautiful and relaxing. I suppose if one has a fear of bridges and water, “scary” would be an understatement. But for most of us I would think this stretch of road is the stuff of dreams.
So what do you think?
