Do they allow dogs on the island. Our beach here in Sebastian is so not dog friendly and my lab grew up on the ocean!

Yes, Linda. Although Charlotte County ordinances specifically prohibit dogs on the beach, there is no one on the island from the county to enforce the rule. The property owners allow well-behaved dogs to run leash-free on the island and you’ll also see plenty of dogs out on the beach, both on-leash and off. There is a sheriff that patrols the island on a four-wheeler, but he is just there to make sure there is no trouble and according to what I hear he is not on dog patrol. This is generally true for both Little Gasparilla and Don Pedro Island. However, dogs are not allowed on Don Pedro Island State Park beaches and are also not allowed on Palm Island resort beaches at the north end of the island chain.

Sounds like a great day trip to make. About how far from Naples?

Dave — I’ve been enjoying your blog. Used to live in Sarasota and work for Mote. We made a lot of trips down to Little Gasparilla for fieldwork. Terrific spot; lots of seagrass in the bay there and resident dolphins.

Thanks for some memories!
