UPDATE 7/20/2012: As a result of re-testing of the water at the beaches where advisories were put in place, the health advisories appear to have been discontinued at all of the beaches listed above. The initial tests were conducted July 16, 2012. The beaches that failed the health test were re-tested on July 19th and all passed the test, meaning they had levels of harmful bacteria that were within acceptable limits.
ORIGINAL REPORT:
The Pinellas County Health Department has issued a beach advisory for the water at the following beaches, based on the marine water bacterial indicator recommended by the EPA:
- Honeymoon Island, Dunedin
- Sand Key Park, Clearwater
- Indian Rocks Beach (1700 Gulf Blvd.)
- Madeira Beach – Archibald Park
- Redington Shores near 182nd Ave. W.
High rainfall and heavy stormwater runoff is likely responsible for this health advisory. Water should return to normal in a few days or weeks.
Next water sampling July 30.
Consider the health risks of swimming in water with high levels of fecal bacteria. Children should definitely not go in the water. Cuts and scratches could become more easily infected. Gastrointestinal infections or worse could result from contact with water on listed beaches.
Thanks to BayNews9 for the heads up on this advisory.
Since the Pinellas County Health Department issued the advisory, you’d think there would be something on their web site, perhaps under “Press Releases.” I couldn’t find anything. Go here to monitor theĀ advisory and water sampling results.
Beaches in Manatee, Sarasota, Lee, Charlotte and Collier Counties are not currently reporting any water health advisories.
