As of today, June 4, 2010 the Pensacola beaches are still open and safe. A few tarballs have been found on a few beaches, but this is not a hazard or a reason to avoid the beach. Many beaches in the US have been experiencing the presence of tarballs from time to time for decades. It’s a new experience for us here on the Gulf coast of Florida, but it’s no reason to panic and no reason to avoid the beach.

Update: Saturday, June 5, 2010–more tar is washing up on the beaches and is floating in the water from Pensacola to Grayton Beach. It isn’t on every beach in those areas, but is in spots here and there. Reports indicate that more is just offshore and is expected to move in over the next few days.
