Our Obama Garden

Our Spring Florida backyard garden--phase 1.

I’ve been wanting to grow a few veggies and herbs in the back yard since I bought this house in 2002. Problem is, this area is nothing but gray sterile sand. and very dry. Heck, even the weeds have trouble growing in our yard.

But you know when I saw Michelle Obama and company putting a garden on the White House lawn (and encouraging the rest of us to follow suit), I couldn’t let them outdo me. I decided to put in a raised garden with good topsoil and humus.

On the left, the big plants are zucchini (blooms are now visible on the stalk). In the upper portion, clockwise, are basil, Thai basil, cilantro, and spearmint. This bed is 6′ X 4′.

If all goes well I’ll put in 3 or 4 more of these. I’d like to have some sugar snap peas and maybe some collard greens and fresh garlic. Maybe a few more herbs too. We’ll see how it goes.
