Friday Night in Bokeelia

The dock of the Beachhouse Lodge is, so far, my favorite dock in Florida.  As you can see, the end of the dock is quite a nice distance from the “real” world.

I have to admit that it was pretty chilly for this Florida native, standing on the end of the dock at sunset with a north wind howling. And I was getting pretty hungry too. So I drove about a quarter mile to the Lazy Flamingo Restaurant over by the Four Winds Marina.

If you’ve been to Sanibel Island, you are probably familiar with the Lazy Flamingo. Well, they’ve got one here too.

This Lazy Flamingo Restaurant is a relaxed, friendly spot that serves excellent food. I had a great Mesquite-grilled grouper sandwich with a salad. The fish was fresh and grilled to perfection. I could actually see the flames on the grill back in the kitchen.

Up to this point, the gold standard for grouper sandwiches for me has been the Turtle Shack Cafe in Flagler Beach. Now they have some SERIOUS competition. The Lazy Flamingo grouper sandwich had less fish in total, but it was a much thicker and fresher filet. It tasted like it had just come out of the water. And you know that’s hard to find these days.

Well, their menu does assert that “if our seafood were any fresher we would be serving it under water.” It’s true. And I’m a harsh judge of seafood restaurants.

My salad was nothing to write home about, but it was fresh, and my lemonade was sweet, just the way I like it. And the second best part: only $13.75.
