That’s right, you’ll enjoy all of those benefits and more when you participate in this continuing education class designed for adult learners (over 50). You’ll be learning all kinds of things you never knew about Florida beaches by getting to know Honeymoon Island up close and personal.

WHAT: This is a nonformal educational class designed for seasoned adult learners (over 50) with classroom and “in the field” experience.  The instructor is Dr. Tonya Clayton. You’ll start in the classroom with an illustrated tour of Florida’s Gulf beaches to discover the secrets of how beaches work. You’ll become familiar with the unique plants and animals that shape, live on and visit our beaches. Next, you’ll take a dive into the fascinating history and natural resources of Honeymoon Island, the site of one of Florida’s most popular state parks. Finally, you and your classmates will journey to this ever-changing barrier island to practice “reading” beach features and getting totally “hands-on.” (Mother Nature will determine the trip content.)

WHEN: The class meets four times in July/August 2015 on the following Thursdays between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm:

July 30: Introduction to Florida’s Gulf Coast and the art and science of reading beaches
August 6: The beach web-of-life, including guest speaker on local beach-nesting birds
August 13: The life and times of Honeymoon Island, including guest speaker on the birth of the state park
August 20: Visit to Honeymoon Island, with park naturalist (agenda TBD by Mother Nature)

YOUR INSTRUCTOR and GUIDE:  Tonya Clayton, PhD Oceanography. Dr. Clayton is a science writer and editor. She also is a Florida Master Naturalist and a graduate of the Florida Natural Resources Leadership Institute. She is the author of the most excellent and easily understood How to Read a Florida Gulf Coast Beach.

PERSONAL ENDORSEMENT: I have had the pleasure of listening to several of Dr. Clayton’s presentations and they are top notch. This will be an enjoyable experience and you will come away with a lot more than just a collection of facts about the beaches. The class may provide you with all you care to know about the beaches, or it may just be a springboard to a lifetime of exploration and discovery.
