As is customary each Memorial Day Weekend, Dr. Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach) has just announced his “Top 10 Beaches in America” list for 2012. This year, only two Florida beaches appear on the list, as follows:

#4  Saint George Island State Park beach, and

#8  Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne, Florida (Bill Baggs)

Here are some photos I took a couple of years ago at St George Island State Park:

St. George Island is located in the Florida Panhandle, several miles offshore from Apalachicola. It’s a great island for a get-away. The eastern end of the island is the state park. The rest offers beach rentals and a few restaurants. Summer is the main beach season on St. George and the rest of the panhandle region, whereas winter and spring is the main season in peninsular Florida.

One thing I noticed when I visited St. George is that the water was not as crystal clear as it is further west in Panama City Beach, and the sand down by water’s edge wasn’t as white. Still a beautiful beach and worthy of the #4 spot on Dr. Beach’s list.

A series of long bridges and causeways leads from the Apalachicola, Florida area out to St. George Island.
