Volunteer Seabird Rescue Effort in Florida from David McRee on Vimeo.
Recently I’ve posted about the consequences of seabirds coming into contact with fishing line and fish hooks. I’ve put together this little video clip of the day I spent with several local seabird rescue volunteers who were working the south pier on the Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay. I want to show that considerable effort is being put into helping the birds and many, many birds are being saved a certain death from hook-and-line injuries.
I’ll be posting more video in the coming months, showing how the birds are treated and where they recover before being released. There are a lot of caring and dedicated volunteers who work daily to help these beautiful birds. These efforts and the infrastructure needed to support the bird rescue effort are all funded by contributions from the public. I love this because it is a wonderful example of how we as a society, as a community, as a neighborhood, can solve our own problems. We don’t have to wait for a government program or grant. Just Do It! Git ‘er Done! Whatever it takes.
Support the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary and Save Our Seabirds, and definitely drop by their facilities and see what they are all about. They need more volunteers, even for just one day per month. It’s exciting and rewarding work, and the birds are easy to work with. The pelicans are really friendly.
