Dr. Archie Carr: A True Florida Pioneer

Posted by David McRee at BlogTheBeach.com.

Dr. Archie Carr’s name is usually mentioned in the same sentence as the words “sea turtles.” That’s how I became aware of his significance in Florida’s history–through his work with sea turtles.

The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge on central Florida’s Atlantic coast bears his name. I spent some time there this summer with wildlife photographer Jim Angy photographing the beach, the dunes, wildlife, and sea turtle tracks. It’s a special place.

This morning one of my regular blog readers, Alan, commented on my latest jellyfish post. As usual after he comments, I visited his fine blog, http://www.suwanneerefugee.blogspot.com/. His latest post listed several significant Florida related websites that he finds valuable. I highly recommend that you check out the list in his post titled “Florida Quick Hits.” You’ll be glad you did. I’m not sure how “quick” it will be though. I’ve already spent the better part of an hour on one of the sites and I’m just getting started.

One of the sites he recommends is EquinoxDocumentaries.org. That’s where I found the above video about the Carr family cabin. If you like “Old Florida,” you’ll enjoy the video and you’ll learn some context about Dr. Archie Carr and some of the things that influenced his love of nature.

Let me know what you think.
