Kayaking Charlotte Harbor’s Woolverton Trail

Kayaking Charlotte Harbor’s Woolverton Trail from David McRee on Vimeo.

One of my favorite parts of my recent trip to the Charlotte Harbor area was my kayak trip in the Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserve. The Woolverton Trail is part of the Blueway Trail. This amazing path through the otherwise impenetrable red and black mangrove forest was originally mapped out by Ed Woolverton, who received a Pioneer award for his efforts.

Grande Tours of Placida (Near Boca Grande and Little Gasparilla/Don Pedro/Palm Island) hooked me up with a kayak and gave me the lay of the land. I only had an hour or two to make a quick exploratory trip, so Chris Warren of Grande Tours showed me how to quickly get to the Woolverton Trail’s mangrove tunnel.

It was a very enjoyable paddle and I dallied longer than I had planned. I only  paddled about 5% of the Woolverton Trail before I had to head back to the launch, so I look forward to returning when I have more time. Grande Tours is a great outfit in a perfect location, and I’ll write more about my visit with them later. If you are in the area, you must  go for a kayak trip.
