Kayaking to Caladesi Island

David McRee arriving on Caladesi Island by Kayak

Here I’ve just beached my rental kayak on Caladesi Island.

Kayaking to Caladesi Island State Park is one of the easiest and most enjoyable kayak adventures you can take on Florida’s Gulf coast. There are several approaches you can take:

  • Bring your own kayak.
  • Rent a Kayak from Sail Honeymoon on the Dunedin causeway.
  • Rent a kayak from Honeymoon Island State Park.

In the first two instances you’ll be paddling a little over 3,000 feet over a fairly shallow bay. You do have to cross a deeper channel, but it is fairly sheltered. For most people it’s a 20 minute paddle. In the last instance, where you rent the kayak from the concessionaire at Honeymoon Island State Park, you’ll paddle south about 1,500 feet along the beach toward the southern tip of Honeymoon Island, then another 1,400 feet across Hurricane Pass to the northern tip of Caladesi.

From Hurricane Pass at the northern tip of Caladesi, it’s a little more than a mile of additional paddling southward to get to the restrooms and concession on Caladesi Island.

From Hurricane Pass it’s slightly more than 5 miles to paddle to Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach. That would be about an hour and a half to two hours of paddling (one way), depending on the kayak, the conditions and the paddler’s ability.

The easiest way to get to Caladesi Island State Park is to take the passenger ferry from Honeymoon Island.
