This is a dramatic video filmed by Gerd Traue that has attracted over 3,000,000 views on YouTube in the last few weeks. On March 5, 2012, a pod of about 30 dolphins beached themselves at Arraial do Cabo, Brazil. The local people wanted to save them, so pulled them all back into the water. It appeared that the dolphins did not re-beach themselves. At least not right away.
Did they do the right thing? Who knows. They did the only thing they could do rather than watch the dolphins slowly die on the beach.
No one knows why dolphins and other cetaceans strand themselves. Some say it is because of disease, others think it is because they are disoriented by loud underwater noises. Personally, I lean toward the idea that they are trying to escape a predator, like a Killer whale or sharks.
Whatever the case, this is a very interesting video to watch.
Thanks to Ron Adley of Ocean Care Solutions (jellyfish sting products) for letting me know about this video.
