Beachcones Separate Cars & People

Orange Beach Safety Cones

Every once in a while someone leaves a comment on my blog to promote their website, product, or service. Usually I delete those kinds of promotional comment posts. However, “Rich” left a comment on one of my posts this morning with a link promoting his orange beach safety cones. I thought it deserved mention, since I’m all about beach safety.

“Beachcones” are orange traffic cones for people to use on beaches where driving is allowed, like Daytona Beach. It makes sense that setting out a couple of these bright orange safety cones around your family would help keep cars in the driving lane and away from you and your children.

The Orlando Sentinel recently published a chart showing Volusia County beach driving injuries and deaths. Here is an excerpt:

  • In 2009, there were five people injured in beach driving collisions. Two of those people were hit by motor vehicles, while the other three were struck by golf carts, according to Volusia County officials.
  • July 24, 2006 – Angelo Patitucci, 77, of Ormond Beach, ran over his wife Lena, who had stepped out of the car to help push the car out of a patch of soft sand. She remained conscious throughout the rescue.
  • July 3, 2006 – Haleigh Howerton, a Georgia college student, was sunbathing when Robert Augustynowski, a Beach Patrol Officer with more than 20 years’ experience, ran her over. Augustynowski was cited for careless driving and had to pay a $118 fine. Volusia County paid a $100,000 legal settlement.
  • February 2003 — A Miami Beach police officer ran over two sunbathers, killing one of them. Stephanie Tunc, 27, was killed and her sister Sandrine Tunc, 26, was injured. The sisters were visiting from Paris.
  • Between 1998 and 2003, there were 43 accidents in Volusia County involving vehicles and people on the beach.

Not all of the accidents would have been prevented by safety cones, but some might have been.
