If you’ve been keeping up with this blog recently you may have noticed the many reports of blue jellyfish and purple sea snails (aka “the blue fleet) washing up on Florida’s Atlantic beaches in the past month or so. Above is a photo from Jeff Poje of Miami showing two Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish (Physalia) among hundreds of By-the-Wind Sailors (Vellela vellela). Jeff is the Miami distributor for Stingmate, a product you may have heard me mention before that is used for treating jellyfish stings.
Ron Adley, VP of Sales and Marketing for First Aid Mates, keeps me updated on the latest products they offer as well as on field test results. A treatment that has been proving effective for treating Man-of-War stings is the application of Stingmate along with heat at 113 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 to 12 minutes.
First responders should be aware that First Aid Mates offers convenient “Man-of-War” kits with Stingmate, tweezers, snap activated heat bar, gauze, wrap and topical ointment.

Stingmate comes in a one-ounce bottle for convenience. Photo courtesy of Stingmate.
Currently being tested in the Caribbean is First Aid Mate’s Mosquito Bite Relief Gel. So far the results are reported to be very good. Further testing will take place in the mosquito infested areas of Minnesota, Louisiana and the Florida Everglades. The mosquito is one animal that is definitely not on the “endangered” list in Florida.

Disclaimer: I have NO financial interest in this product. I do not earn a commission from product sales. This is not a paid advertisement. First Aid Mates did supply me with a sample of their jellyfish sting treatment product last year, but I have not had occasion to use it (thankfully!). I offer this information for educational purposes in the hopes that it might help you. If I were stung, I would certainly not hesitate to use StingMate or any of their other products which are backed by extensive field testing.
