During my trip to Key West and the Dry Tortugas I stayed in three separate accommodations. I’ve published photos and reviews on my website BeachHunter.net:
Review of Atlantic Bay Resort on Key Largo
Review of the Blackfin Resort & Marina in Marathon
Review of the Albury Court in Key West
I’ve also put together a list of other places to stay in the Florida Keys that looked interesting as I drove by on the way home. Some are for budget travelers and others are somewhat higher priced.
Resorts, hotels, and motels in the Keys tend to cater heavily to boaters, fishermen and divers, rather than to people looking for a beach vacation. That’s because most of the islands in the Keys do not have beaches. The best option for most people who want to enjoy a beach vacation in the Keys is to pick a resort as close as possible to the best beaches in the Florida Keys.
Some resorts have their own private beach, but you’ll find that most of them don’t live up to the term “beach.” In their Florida Beaches guide, travel writers Puterbaugh and Bisbort describe Florida Keys resort beaches as “a quarter inch of kitty litter sprinkled atop a hard coral spine and raked into neat furrows by groundskeepers early each morning,” but also note that they are “better than nothing.” I find that their description is, to borrow a phrase from Mark Twain, photographic for its exactness.
The photo in this blog post is one I took at Smathers Beach in Key West.
