I drove out to the beach today to see if the strong northwest winds had brought in any interesting shells or flotsam and jetsam. I put on my winter parka because I knew the cold would be brutal by Florida native standards.
Most everyone else was bundled up too. There was one lady laying out on the beach in a green bikini. Unbelievable.
I like to study patterns in the beach sand. One of my favorites is the formations caused by strong winds scouring the top layer of sand from the beach. The shells are too heavy for the wind to move, so they stay in place while all the sand around them gets carried away. Some shells are left perched atop a small sand column, while parts of other shells that were buried get exposed.
Not many shells had yet appeared on the beach, but I did find a small patch of shells on Sunset Beach, just south of the small rock jetty. Lots of broken shells, but some nice ones too. Over the next 3 or 4 days more shells should appear. If you like shelling and beachcombing, the next few days should be productive in southwest Florida.
