Snowy Egret Table Etiquette

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

I shot some video of this beautiful snowy egret on Upham beach while it was stalking fish in the shallow water. Snowy egrets are such beautiful birds. Their bright yellow feet are striking in contrast to their jet black legs and snow-white body.

This bird suddenly interrupted its fishing expedition and took a very purposeful hike up onto dry sand. I thought it odd and wondered if it simply didn’t like my presence and was trying to get away from me. But no, it had a definite bird purpose in mind and I had nothing to do with it. I guess birds want to keep their water clean.

Snowy Egret fishing by the pier.

One of the most beautiful birds in Florida is the snowy egret. They are pure white. Several other egrets in Florida are also pure white: American egret, cattle egret, great white heron, the white ibis, and the rare white phase of the reddish egret. So how can you tell a snowy egret apart from the rest?

The snowy egret has a black bill and YELLOW FEET. It is the only white egret with black legs and bright yellow feet!

You’ll see them fishing in the shallow water on the beach and you’ll see them hanging around on fishing piers too. They will sometimes approach you quite closely if you sit still.
