yesterday on the shores of wanna wanna beach at South padre Island. these beautiful (now i know their name) creatures were floating everywhere around us while wadding the ocean. Curiosity got the best of us and my cousin caught one with the brim of a baseball cap and brought it up to shore, We touched its slimy what seemed like tentacles with no irration nor pain. The underside was visible and we touched that area to with no problems.

when trying to place it back into the ocean it was stuck to the hat and unfortunetly pulled apart into pieces. Many of these creatures washed up on shore...you can imagine the crowds they attracted. A local frightend the crowd saying that if the center was punctured a dangerous fluid would burn them. Thank you for your site information.

I found a few blue buttons on Galveston Island this past weekend, July 24, 2010. I had never seen them and we assumed they were some type of jellyfish so didn't touch them. They kept washing up on shore. I took some cool pictures....thanks for identifying them!

On May 30,2011 I saw three blue buttons in the water off Folly Beach SC. I lived at Folly 1982-1987, and visited many time since for vacation and had never seen one here before.

Thanks for the report Sheri! Based on all the reports I'm getting, the blue buttons can sting, or at least irritate sensitive skin on children and adults. Some individuals are more sensitive than others. You might try putting vinegar on the sting and see if that helps. Other standard remedies include benadryl and hydrocortisone cream (on small skin areas, not for major skin surface areas).

Just came back from Jacksonville Beach, saw quite a few out there today. I had never seen them before anywhere. They really are beautiful. But, my son did end up getting stung by something and the Blue Buttons were the only things we saw out there today. He has some nasty looking welts on his arm and we're keeping a close eye on him since he tends to have delayed allergic reactions to stings and bites.

my husband and I are diving in bonaire right now, and saw a wave of blue buttons going by on the surface, after our dive. the dive guide who has lived here for 20 years, said she had never seen them. we researched "jellyfish" and found all this info. we live on a small island, in cayman, and have never seen them. thanks for the info. gay morse

They must be touring NC - we saw over a dozen on beach in Corolla, NC. Lifeguards there had not seen them so we bagged one they brought to their Lt. and he identified it as Blue Button.
