Thursday evening I drove out to Coquina Beach with my parents and my brother Joel, who is visiting from Tennessee. None of them had been to the beach in perhaps decades. It was a beautiful sunset and a very relaxing evening.

It was Mom and Dad, of course, who introduced me to the beach as a baby. Mom used to spend summers out at the beach with a friend before she married my Dad, in an apartment somewhere on 81st Ave in Anna Maria.

When my parents were kids, the bridge to the island was a narrow wooden bridge, the vestigage of which now stands as the Bridge Street Pier in Bradenton Beach. The current concrete bridges were built in the 1950’s I believe–shortly before I was born.
